Final Draft
The film will start with a boy aged 16-17, who is unemployed and above all else, fatherless. His father walked out on him from an early age, for reasons that isn't clear to him. Any topic related to his father he brings up is instantly rejected by his mother, who doesn't give any reason to his father leaving, or why she doesn't like talking about him. The story is about a boy who is looking for his identity, a part of him that is missing, a big influence in his life. He uses technology and social networking to assist him in his search, and so reflects on the tools we have today to help him in his search. He finds out the location and the indentity of his father and takes it upon his responsibility to look for his father. He finds out his father is a teacher and goes on a search to find him, reminded with flash backs of events that have happened, illustrating him being lost and wanting to know who he is. He eventually finds his father, but it ends there raising a lot of questions.
film – in detail
We start off with an employed teenager who’s getting out of bed, with his mum waking him up telling him to go job hunting. We then have a intro song played, where we see our protagonist getting ready, cleaning himself and then getting changed. The intro then ends with him falling back onto his bed. Throughout this intro we have a fast paced song played setting the mood of our short film.
And that was our introduction. We have the title of our film and then we have the film start up again.
His mum has recently lost her job and she’s also looking in a newspaper. They’re a middle class family. The teenager is aged 16-17, and isn’t in any form of education as he didn’t go to college. The teenager asks his mum, “We’ve been struggling since, well I guess since dad left... Why did he leave?” His mum goes quiet and sips a bit of coffee and gets up. She tells him “never mind that, things happen, people change. It’s just us, and he doesn’t deserve to be a part of that.” Quickly our protagonist replies “But why, what gave him the reason to go”, and the mum walks out and we get our title come up. He then whispers “You never fucking say...” and the seen ends with us seeing our protagonist’s face looking a bit stressed.
We then have our protagonist in a new scene walking talking on his phone holding a sleeve of paperwork, he then says goodbye to whoever he was talking to and then we’re introduced to a new character, his friend. We have this new character ask how many CV’s he has on him, we then get a POV shot of the paperwork from our protagonist who replies the amount. We then have a scene where the characters interact, and the new character asks why not just go college, and our protagonist replies “Mum... She just wants me to get a job, it’s been hard for her since Dad went..” The character replies, do you even remember him? And our protagonist replies “no, not really.. I only know his...” Our character then stops, and the other look at him and say “Know his what? (We see a flash back of our character looking through a ripped of picture, then looking at his own birth certificate and we see the dad’s name, we then go back into the scene) And the protagonist replies, “His name... Look <characters name> I’m going to have ditch, I’m really sorry man” –our protagonist runs off- and our other character shouts as the protagonist is running, “but what about the job hunt?” as we see our protagonist running and the other character blurred behind him.
We have our character then return home, running upstairs and straight into the room upstairs, his mum is at the bottom of the stairs, and shouts, “why are you back, you left something?!” The character then is in his room and shouts back down “No, just left something” We then hear the mum shouting in the background “Well hurry up, we have the decorators for the stairs coming soon”. We then have our character log onto his computer and go on Facebook. He then whispers to himself and thinks “Someone who mum knows” and repeats, then with surprise says “Jo”. He then goes through her friends list and we have another flash back of our characters birth certificate so we clearly see the father’s name, he then write out his name and we get a friend pop up. He then selects the friend and freezes in shock. He hovers over the friend request button, and then moves to the profiles information; it says “Teaches Media at Greenshaw High School”. Our protagonist then Google map’s Greenshaw high school and finds its location, a few miles away from his home address. He then looks at methods to travel and finds a local bus route that will take him there. We then have him take a picture of the map on his screen and close the browser. We then have another flashback of him going through family photos and finding ripped images. We then see him waiting at the bus stop looking anxious at his phone spinning it in his hand. He then sees the bus in the distance and gets up and waves to get on. We then see our protagonist repairing to get on. We see him get on the bus and sit down. We then see him looking out the window reminiscing. Another flash back we get of him and his mum arguing, and him wanting to know who his dad was. We then see him looking at the profile picture of his dad, on the bus, we then have an address of a road spoken out by the bus’s speaker and the protagonist with no hesitation presses the button and gets off. We then see him walking up a hill, and then we see the school. He then walks into the school’s main reception and requests to see the teacher by saying “I’m here for Mr D’Elia, a media teacher?” The receptionist apologies and says he’ll have to wait until 4, as teachers won’t be teaching. He then looks at his watch and he doesn’t want to wait, someone then walks out the school’s door and he rushes to gain entrance into the school. He runs down the corridor with the receptionist rushing out shouting down at him telling him to stop. He then runs and meets a student, where he asks where Media is. The student then gives him directions. We follow the character and we gain entrance into the media department. We then have POV through the window where we see our protagonists father teaching. The protagonist breathes in and goes in, the teacher looks at him confused, and our protagonist says “Dad... why did you have to leave” We see our protagonists hand trembling and we have students looking around confused, the teacher is looking shocked, and says our characters name, we then have a close shot of our protagonist swallowing anxiously, and our film ends on a dramatic ending.
