The narrative is way the story is told. Having a simple structure that has a fluent flow of how a story is wished to be portrayed by the director. Not only should it be compulsary for all directors, it's very logical, you have a start, middle and ending - this breaks down the narative the director wishes to portay into pieces of a puzzle, and theoreticle it's expressing a journey where the roads build up to meet the concluding ending, it's a technique all successful directors follow. You'll have different narratives ruled out by the director in which the story will follow, yet it gives time for the story to flourish and develop into more ideas. By that I mean, if the story was just focusing on a single character, that character will have to have their own stories shown within the 3 parts, now that can lead to portaying different influences on that character, and further more adding much more depth and engagement within the story, this isn't neccesarily true, but my point is being made alongside those films that are successfully created and follow a single strand narrative.

There are different narrative structures that make up a story. Many famous films such as the Lord of the Rings, Twilight as well as Harry Potter. Now many will argue that Harry Potter is a single strand narrative, however in my view I see it as a story around 3 individuals, not just the one the title of the story belongs to. It wasn't really portaying influences that effected the main character Harry throughout the story, but portraying the adventure of love and passion between a group of friends. It's a very debatealbe topic, and I closely link it to the Lord of the Rings, that story was about a quest of many individuals that are portrayed within it. It doesn't focus on one's background, their adventure, or their individual struggle, but in the bigger picture the struggle of all. The Game of Thrones TV series is the same, it focuses on many characters, there isn't a core individual within the story. It steps aside from the idea of small influences are experiences that shape an individual, being the main character, but steps into the bigger picture of all characters sharing the same interests, that to me is stepping away from the single strand narrative, but into a multi-stand narrative.

Now the most important bit of a story, is the plot. Who is it going to be in it, how will they influence the development of the story, the intention of where the story is going, and the concept? That's the journey that should make the story appeal and be unique. By that I mean, express the directors vision of what they see the story as and how it should be portrayed, and exactly how they can do that. That's where the engagement and the development comes in, a director will never be repetitive with what they display through the journey, only the theme, they'll constantly create different adaptations to what they want to portray in an engaging manner, and it leads to great development within the story, it can either develop and go much more into depth, or take an alternative route in which it cuts a lot of unneccesary details out, this is normally portrayed in films of today. You have the normal edition of a film, a collectors edition with added content, and then an extended edition where unneccesary details are taken out, but then put in to add much mroe flavour and depth into the story. The most greatest of that would definitely be the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the extended editions of each film add another hour on-top of the original's length and adds a much more into depth story, with alterations that make somethings in the original story much more clearer.

Films and stories aren't the only things where these structures oblige to. You'll find them within poems, magazines, newspapers, video games and many more things that are apart of modern day society. This illustrates clearly the importance of the three act structure, and in general the overall effect it has. It gives everything the right direction for development, this concept is broken down into IT terminology, the input, process, and output. Interpretating in the way of film, the beginning of the journey shapes the process, and with the process has the final outcome - it's very important to include and keep the structure.
